Organic cotton
Organic cotton is produced according to the guidelines of organic farming. Unlike conventional cotton farming, the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers is prohibited. For the preservation and improvement of the natural fertility of the soil is fertilized with manure and compost. This increases the humus content of the soil, which can thus store more water and CO. In addition, the susceptibility to erosion is reduced. Furthermore, farmers have to rotate their crops. This means that cotton is grown in rotation with other crops.
Global Organic Textile Standard
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is a globally recognized seal of quality for the processing of textiles made from organically produced natural fibers. GOTS is considered a best practice example and stands for the control of the entire textile chain. The standard covers the production, manufacture, packaging, labeling, trade and distribution of all textiles made from at least 70% certified organically produced natural fibers. The GOTS logo may only be applied if the entire supply and production chain is certified. There are strict guidelines regarding finishing and dyeing. Compliance with basic labor rights according to the core standards of the International Labor Organization (ILO) is verified at the processors' and manufacturers' sites. GOTS requires the implementation of an environmental management system and wastewater treatment in the factory. Certain environmentally harmful chemicals are banned, and there are limits for residues in wastewater.
